Kern Studios, with roots tracing back to 1932, boasts a rich history. It all began with Roy Kern, an artist turned sign painter, who, during the Great Depression, painted ship names on freighters. In 1932, Roy and his son Blaine constructed their first Mardi Gras float on a mule-drawn wagon. Blaine’s talent caught the eye of a surgeon and Mardi Gras Krewe captain, leading to the formal establishment of Kern Studios in 1947. Blaine, known as “Mr. Mardi Gras,” revolutionized float design, drawing inspiration from Europe. Kern Studios later opened Mardi Gras World in 1984, offering visitors an exclusive look at their captivating work, becoming a renowned tourist attraction.

Livaudais Hall, located at 2205 Second Street in Uptown New Orleans, was once home to St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, founded in 1867, just after the Civil War. The building, constructed in 1875 with a bell tower added in 1888, suffered damage in an early 20th-century hurricane. Other structures on the grounds were built in the late 1890s. St. Francis De Sales occupied Livaudais Hall until 2008 when it was sold to a non-profit but left to decay. In 2017, developer Peter Gardner restored the property, converting the convent and rectory into housing and modernizing the sanctuary to serve the community for the next century.
